Service industry employees in Kansas City rely on peers to identify the best places to eat and drink after their shifts. These workers, who make up nearly 10 percent of U.S. employment, often serve hundreds of people daily. They use these interactions to build a network of recommendations that extends beyond their immediate workplaces.

Johanna Morgan, a barista at Broadway Cafe in Westport, directs visitors to San Antonio Carnicería y Tortillería for breakfast or lunch. She typically orders tacos. For dinner, she heads to Harry’s Bar and Tables, a nearby establishment known among industry insiders. Morgan orders gumbo and drinks a horsefeather or Dark ‘n’ Stormy. She prefers dining there in the early evening.

Karson Harris, a lead bartender at XR in the Crossroads district, works late nights closing the lobby bar of the Crossroads Hotel. He creates cocktails using housemade syrups and high-quality whiskeys. His recent creation, Sigourney Weaver’s Bush, features Earl Grey syrup. For breakfast, Harris visits Mildred’s Crossroads location, where he orders a Monte Cristo sandwich and seasonal matcha. After long shifts, he frequents Missie’s for a whiskey Diet Coke. He values the venue's service industry friendly hours and the variety of bars within the same space.

Olivia Cooper, a server at Mildred’s, stated that staff members frequently gather at Chez Charlie. She described the dive bar as a community for the working class. Cooper usually orders a gin and tonic or a pickle shot. When not with colleagues, she visits Westport Cafe for its wine selection and scallops. She finds the location a good way to escape the busy atmosphere of Westport.

AnnMarie Griese, the opening bartender at Chez Charlie, recommends Town Topic for breakfast. Her standard order is the 123: one pancake, two eggs, and a choice of bacon or sausage. She also highlights Dear Donna in the River Market, a new diner that opened in early 2026. The restaurant, run by a couple with multiple James Beard Award Semifinalists, offers a menu that spans brunch to evening dinner. Griese listed The Ship, Hillsiders, Rewind, and Easy-Inn as her preferred bars. She noted that the same regulars frequent all four locations.

Erin Rosele, beverage specialist at the Crossroads Hotel, is developing the winter menu for Percheron, a rooftop bar and restaurant. For brunch, she orders charcuterie and French toast from Fox and Pearl. She appreciates the locally sourced ingredients and the table-side coffee press service. Rosele also enjoys the seasonal mezcal cocktail from Swordfish Tom’s and a grasshopper made with fernet-menta at Chartreuse Saloon.

Katie Crossette, a bartender at Fox and Pearl, also recommends Dear Donna for breakfast, specifically the oyster mushroom bowl. For dinner, she seeks a table at Westport Cafe. She orders oysters or Steak Frites, a cut of steak with creamy Béarnaise sauce and pommes frites. When she is off work, she walks to Fern Bar, which is a quarter of a mile away. She orders the classic espresso martini. If she is with colleagues from Fox and Pearl, the group goes to Chez Charlie.

These workers prioritize specific menu items over generic options. At bars, they focus on seasonal drink menus or unique spins on classic dishes. This approach allows them to find distinct experiences. The recommendations highlight the interconnected nature of the service industry in Kansas City, where staff from different establishments share the same preferred venues.
