Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe faces a life sentence in a Texas state prison following a jury verdict in Midland. The 24-year-old was convicted of one count of capital murder for the death of her daughter, who was five weeks old at the time of the incident.
The infant died on May 11, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Medical records cited severe head trauma as the cause. Investigators noted that the girl suffered two fractures in the back of her skull. Forensic analysis indicated these injuries resulted from blunt force trauma.
Detectives reviewed Gilley-Wroe's mobile phone and identified Google searches that supported the prosecution's case. While in custody, she made statements to a cellmate that authorities deemed incriminating. She told the other inmate that she threw the baby against a wall and struck the child until the crying stopped.
Medical experts testified that the force required to sustain such injuries is comparable to falling from a two-story building. Gilley-Wroe argued that the injuries could have been caused by her aunt, the baby's father, or her dog. However, records showed she was the only person alone with the child during the window in which the crime occurred.
The court accepted the jury's finding that the victim was under ten years old, a factor that influenced the sentencing. The judge ordered Gilley-Wroe to serve the remainder of her life in prison without the possibility of parole. The ruling concludes the legal proceedings for the 2022 death in Midland.
