California residents face a persistent tension between high living costs and a stable population that continues to grow. The state currently is home to almost 40 million people, a number that remains largely unchanged despite frequent public discourse regarding affordability challenges.

The city of Los Angeles alone supports nearly 4 million residents. This density persists even as local and state political campaigns frequently cite the cost of living as a primary crisis. Candidates often rank near the bottom in state affordability metrics, making the issue a central talking point for voters.

Rafael Perez, a columnist for the Southern California News Group, notes that the demographic reality contradicts the narrative of a mass exodus. While many people do leave the state, citing financial concerns, the total population has not suffered a major decline. The data suggests that the number of people staying or moving in balances those who depart.

Perez argues that the decision to remain in California is driven by factors other than just financial metrics. He describes the state as a combination of diverse natural landscapes, including beaches, deserts, forests, and mountains. These geographic features offer a variety of outdoor experiences that he believes are unmatched elsewhere in the world.

The columnist points to the state's cultural diversity as another key retention tool. Residents bring various origins, cultures, and cuisines to California, creating a concentrated environment of different experiences. This variety enriches daily life for those who live there, providing personal value that extends beyond simple economic calculations.

Affordability is one measure of well-being, but the availability of enriching experiences is another, Perez says. He suggests that California scores highly on this second measure. The state offers a dense collection of social and cultural opportunities that residents find compelling enough to offset higher costs.

Personal connections also play a major role in the decision to stay or return. Perez, who moved to Rochester, New York, for graduate school, is considering moving back to Los Angeles. His primary motivation is the location of his family and friends. He states that he would move back near his family even if they lived in a less attractive location.

For many Californians, the state represents the center of their social universe. Moving back allows them to maintain close ties without sacrificing other quality of life factors. Perez describes the return to California as an easy decision because it aligns with his personal priorities regarding family proximity.

The choice to live in California often involves weighing financial strain against geographic and social benefits. Residents are not just paying for housing; they are paying for access to diverse landscapes and a broad range of cultural interactions. This complex calculation explains why the population remains stable despite the high price tag.

Perez emphasizes that the state's residents are often kinder and more genuine than their reputation suggests. He notes that visitors often form opinions based on specific areas of Los Angeles, but long-term residents experience a different reality. This positive social environment contributes to the state's ability to retain its large population base.
