The exchange of long-range strikes on November 5 revealed a sustained focus on energy and logistics networks on both sides of the conflict. Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that it had hit a postal terminal, an electricity substation, and a cargo ship, while Ukrainian drones caused industrial fires in the Ryazan region.

Russian officials stated that drones struck a Nova Poshta terminal in Novyi Korotych, just outside Kharkiv. Nova Poshta operates as Ukraine’s largest private delivery company. The ministry also claimed strikes on a 330-kilovolt substation in the Dnipropetrovsk region. A dry cargo vessel carrying military equipment was hit 52 kilometers southwest of Odesa. Ukrainian authorities had not confirmed the damage to the terminal or the ship by the time of reporting.

In the Ryazan region, approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow, Governor Pavel Malkov reported that more than 200 Ukrainian drones attacked overnight. Debris from the drones started fires at several industrial facilities and damaged power lines. One person was injured. Malkov later confirmed that electricity had been restored and the fires were contained. The independent outlet Astra verified footage of a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery, a facility owned by the state energy company Rosneft. A local school lost windows, prompting the cancellation of classes.

Russian forces also intensified attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said that 80 Russian drones targeted the city and 17 settlements in the previous 24 hours. Six people were injured, including one child. In the Bucha district near Kyiv, overnight drone attacks caused major fires at a logistics center and injured one person. Moscow argues that these logistics facilities support the Ukrainian military. Nova Poshta sites have been targeted repeatedly, with an attack on a Kyiv sorting center in August killing three people.

In Donetsk, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported four civilian deaths and five injuries from attacks on Wednesday. Two deaths occurred in Serhiivka and two in Yasnohirka. Local media reported that women in Yasnohirka were killed when two Russian glide bombs struck the village.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have increased after a brief pause in late October. The Yaroslavl refinery was struck two days before the Ryazan incident. Fuel production has continued, though occasional shortages have been reported as drivers rushed to buy fuel following the news of the strikes.

Russia has also expanded its strikes on Ukraine’s electricity grid. Rolling blackouts have affected Kyiv since mid-October. Some residents have gone days without power or water. City authorities stated that heating would remain off until temperatures stay at minus 5 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days. Temperatures were nearing zero at the time of reporting.
