Thirty people died in a high-speed rail collision in Toledo province on Wednesday.

Two trains operated by AVE and Iryo crashed shortly before 9:15 a.m. on the line connecting Madrid and Seville. One train was stopped when the other struck it at a speed exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. The impact sent at least two carriages down an embankment.

Railway infrastructure manager Adif confirmed that traffic on the route to Andalusia was suspended. Preliminary reviews suggest human error contributed to the accident. Government sources told El Pais that an Adif operator made a mistake during a fault in the automated signaling system. These systems usually run on their own, but they require manual action when technical problems occur. The inquiry focuses on that manual intervention.

More than 500 passengers were aboard the two trains. An Advanced Medical Post was set up at the crash site to triage the injured. Hospitals received patients needing further care, but the total number of injured was not confirmed by Wednesday.

Health Minister Monica Garcia called the event a major tragedy in a television statement. She said the death toll was not yet final but the loss was large. Authorities opened a local sports hall as a reception point for families.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez posted on social media that emergency services were coordinating with local administrations. He expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. The crash occurred as Spain prepares for a snap election next month. Sanchez called for the early vote following unrest over the housing crisis.

Vox party leader Santiago Abascal criticized the government in a social media post. He described the incident as neglect and betrayal. His party is expected to gain seats in the upcoming election, and the crash has increased scrutiny on the administration.
