AI Backers See Billions In Gains
Early and late-stage investors in Anthropic are holding stakes worth billions ahead of a potential public listing this year.

For the investors who backed Anthropic early, the upcoming public listing represents a massive financial event. The company is expected to go public later this year with a valuation that could reach $2 trillion. Even before that final step, the current private market value of $965 billion means that many venture capitalists and early supporters are already sitting on billions of dollars in equity. The gap between their initial investments and current valuations highlights the extraordinary speed at which this artificial intelligence firm has grown.
The path to this valuation has been rapid and steep. In 2021, the startup was valued at just $461 million during its Series A round. By 2023, that number had risen to $5 billion during the Series C. Just last year, the company reached a $183 billion valuation, and earlier this year it hit $380 billion. Now, at $965 billion, the company is on track to potentially double that figure again when it lists on the public markets. This trajectory has turned modest early checks into multi-billion dollar positions for a select group of firms.
One of the most notable gains belongs to Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO. He invested in the 2021 Series A when the company was worth a fraction of its current size. Today, his stake represents about 1% of the company. At the latest private valuation, that slice of ownership is worth nearly $10 billion. His position illustrates how early entry into a high-growth sector can yield massive returns even before a company goes public.
Iconiq took a different approach by entering at a much later stage. The investment firm wrote a check for $6 billion last year when Anthropic was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage bet has grown to a value of $17 billion. If the IPO proceeds as expected, that figure could double. This demonstrates that even investors who join after the initial hype cycle can secure significant profits if the company continues its upward trajectory.
Menlo Ventures has been a long-term partner in this growth story. The firm led the Series D funding round and has invested more than $1 billion in total over time. Their current stake is valued at $14 billion. This sustained commitment to the company has allowed them to build a substantial position that reflects the firm’s confidence in Anthropic’s long-term potential in the AI landscape.
Sequoia entered the picture more recently, backing the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. At that point, the company was already valued at $380 billion. The firm invested $3 billion to secure about 1% ownership. This investment has already more than doubled in value. For a firm known for its long-term horizon, this quick appreciation underscores the intense capital appreciation happening in the tech sector right now.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. They initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, they have funneled an additional $400 million into the company. That combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the original fund retains its Anthropic shares.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to have a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. Their board seat provides them with direct influence over company strategy, which may have contributed to the aggressive growth that fueled these gains.
As the IPO approaches, these figures are likely to shift. The expected $2 trillion valuation would further increase the worth of every stake held by these firms. For ordinary investors watching the market, this signals how much capital is concentrated in a single AI player. The success of this listing will likely set the tone for other tech companies seeking to go public in the coming year.
The next few months will be critical for Anthropic and its backers. The company must navigate the complexities of a public offering while maintaining the growth rate that attracted these massive investments. If the valuation reaches the predicted highs, the early backers and late-stage giants alike will see their net worth increase substantially. This event will be a major test of how the public market values artificial intelligence dominance.
