The Chinese artificial intelligence laboratory DeepSeek has reportedly secured approximately 15 billion dollars in new investment, a figure that translates to roughly 100 billion yuan. This significant financial injection marks one of the largest funding events in the nation's history. The announcement came with notable timing, as it arrived just two days after the United States government ordered federal civilian agencies to purge DeepSeek's technology from their infrastructure due to security concerns.

According to reports from Bloomberg, the capital raise includes participation from major domestic corporate entities. Potential investors in this round have been identified to include CATL, a leading Chinese battery manufacturer, as well as Tencent, the tech giant known for developing the WeChat messaging platform. The involvement of these high-profile firms underscores the strategic importance of DeepSeek within the Chinese economic landscape.

This latest financial move builds upon a series of aggressive fundraising efforts by the company in the past year. In June, DeepSeek raised more than 7 billion dollars at a valuation of 50 billion dollars. Subsequent reports indicated that the company was seeking an additional 1.5 billion dollars in July, which would have placed its valuation at approximately 71 billion dollars. These efforts were part of a broader strategy that included plans for a potential initial public offering in China as early as next year.

Despite facing regulatory headwinds in the United States, the Hangzhou-based startup is accelerating its expenditures. The company is increasing its spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and developing open models for both domestic and international markets. Analysts suggest that this expansion could further intensify competition among DeepSeek's domestic rivals, forcing them to adapt to a more competitive local environment.

The scale of this funding round is indicative of a global trend where investors are allocating billions of dollars to artificial intelligence firms to maintain a competitive edge. In China specifically, the investment activity has been robust. Moonshot AI, the developer of the Kimi model, secured 2 billion dollars at a 20 billion dollar valuation in May. More recently, Manus AI raised over 500 million dollars earlier this month. Publicly traded peers such as Zhipu AI and MiniMax, both of which listed in Hong Kong in January, currently hold market capitalizations of approximately 29 billion dollars and 7.2 billion dollars, respectively, as of today.

DeepSeek was established in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who previously co-founded the Chinese quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer. This parent organization provided crucial early financial support for the startup. The company gained worldwide recognition in early 2025 with the release of its free, open-weight R1 reasoning model, which posed a significant challenge to the dominance of American AI firms. Following its earlier funding rounds, Liang retains an estimated 81.6 percent stake in the company's Chinese operating entity, according to corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen.

The company has not yet provided an official statement regarding the new funding or the concurrent U.S. regulatory actions. As the AI race continues to accelerate, DeepSeek's ability to leverage this substantial capital while navigating geopolitical tensions will be closely monitored by industry observers and competitors alike.
