Anthropic has officially entered the crowded arena of AI agents with the launch of Claude Duet, a tool specifically engineered for professionals and small businesses rather than general consumers. The company is positioning this new application as a strategic counter to a wave of competitors, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo, in a market that sees new productivity assistants debut every week.

The technical foundation of this launch is substantial. Claude Duet is built upon the Claude Opus 5.5 model and integrates with more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available through the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows the agent to interact with a wide array of third-party services, enabling it to build daily briefings, generate dashboards, and suggest specific actions based on the data it processes for the user.

Unlike personal assistants that might book a flight or handle household errands, Duet is defined by what it does not do. Anthropic explicitly distinguishes the product from consumer-focused agents like Instinct, noting that Duet is not designed to manage tickets or perform simple errands. Furthermore, it does not display its browser activity in real-time, focusing instead on background processing and results.

The operational model relies on background execution. Duet can complete tasks within its own virtual machine while the user continues with other work. It operates proactively, monitoring ongoing tasks and delivering recommendations without waiting for direct prompts. If the agent encounters a step that requires human judgment, it pauses and returns to the user for approval before proceeding.

Security and payment handling are central to the user experience. Anthropic has implemented a new classifier that scans each message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the agent will decline requests for credit card numbers or government identification documents. While Duet can make online purchases on behalf of users via Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, sensitive financial steps always require explicit user consent. Notably, the agent will not trade securities or transfer money between bank accounts.

This launch reflects a broader industry shift from simple chatbots to autonomous agents that work on behalf of users. Many of Anthropic’s rivals are moving in the same direction, emphasizing business use cases. For instance, while Meta’s Muse is primarily a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses with deeper app connections. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots is pitched with a business slant, featuring integrations with professional tools.

Currently, Claude Duet is available as a mobile application for iOS and Android users, as well as through the web interface at Claude.ai. Access is restricted to Pro and Max customers who are part of a research preview program. Users must join a waitlist to gain access, signaling that the rollout is still in its initial phases as Anthropic gathers feedback and refines the agent's capabilities.

The stakes in this new market segment are high, as companies compete to define the standard for AI-driven workplace automation. By targeting the specific needs of small businesses and professionals, Anthropic aims to capture a segment that personal assistants often overlook. The success of Claude Duet will likely depend on how effectively it balances autonomy with the security controls required for professional environments.
