For everyday users of AI tools, the immediate change is subtle: the company behind ChatGPT is choosing to stay private for now. By securing a massive new round of private funding, OpenAI is pushing back its debut on public stock exchanges. This move keeps the firm out of the public market, meaning ordinary investors cannot buy shares in the company at this time. The organization is instead relying on private capital to fuel its growth.

The timeline of how the company arrived at this decision begins in March. During that month, a funding round valued the chatbot maker at $852 billion. By June, OpenAI had filed confidential paperwork to begin the process for an initial public offering (IPO). However, recent reports indicate the company has chosen a different path, opting for private investment rather than proceeding with a public listing.

According to sources cited in reports, the company is working to raise up to $30 billion. This funding would be provided at a valuation of $1.25 trillion before the new money is added. The investment is being led by Coatue and investors from the UAE. Reports also suggest that funding from the UAE could be paired with a deal to secure more computing capacity for the AI lab.

Terms for this funding are still being negotiated and could change. However, if the company reaches a valuation above $1 trillion, it would hold a record as the most highly valued private company ever. This high valuation would also set a high bar for a future IPO. OpenAI declined to comment on the reports.

The situation is also connected to other companies in the field. Reports have the AI firm Anthropic seeking a valuation between $1.5 to $2 trillion for its own public debut. Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May, in what was seen as a final private round before an IPO. Like OpenAI, Anthropic filed confidential paperwork in June.

The immediate future for OpenAI involves completing the negotiation for this private funding round. While an IPO is not happening right now, the company has already filed the necessary paperwork for one. This means the organization is focused on securing private capital and computing resources, while its plans for a public offering remain on hold for the time being.
