Kylian Mbappe scored twice on Sunday night to silence the home crowd at Camp Nou. The French forward's double gave Real Madrid a 2-1 victory over Barcelona. It was the first league loss for Barcelona this season.
The result broke a nine-game winning streak for the Catalan club. Had Barcelona won, they would have surpassed Real Madrid's 1968-69 record for the best start in Spanish top-flight history. Instead, Los Blancos took three points and the bragging rights.
This was Barcelona's second consecutive defeat. They fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days earlier under manager Hansi Flick. The loss ended a perfect start for Barcelona in the domestic league.
The victory moved the all-time head-to-head record in Real Madrid's favor. Madrid now holds 107 wins against 106 for Barcelona in their rivalry. The shift comes after two seasons without major trophies for Madrid.
Mbappe's brace brought his goal tally for Real to 100 across all competitions since joining from PSG in 2024. He has scored 14 goals this season. The 27-year-old is currently the second-best scorer in La Liga.
The milestone arrives ahead of the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday. Mbappe is a frontrunner for the award after finishing as the top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League last season. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and became the all-time leading World Cup scorer.
Real Madrid has won five matches in a row, including three in La Liga and two in the Champions League. This run follows earlier setbacks against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month. The stability has helped them close the gap at the top of the table.
With 10 matches played, Real sits third with 24 points. Barcelona leads with 27, while Atletico Madrid is second with 25. Jose Mourinho, who returned to the club after a 13-year absence, celebrated with his trademark knee slide. He noted that Madrid plays to win the championship, not just single matches.
