Philadelphia appointed Adrian Jordan as its first Rat Abatement Manager on October 28. The new role is designed to coordinate a citywide response to a persistent rodent problem. Jordan has worked to fight rats in the city for more than 20 years.
The initiative consolidates efforts across six city departments. These agencies include Public Health, Streets, Sanitation, and the Water Department. The goal is to address conditions in residential and commercial areas that attract rodents. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker described the move as a coordinated response to a quality-of-life concern.
City officials plan to begin door-to-door surveys in Northeast Philadelphia neighborhoods. The initial focus areas are Oxford Circle and Castor Gardens. Staff will identify infestations and provide residents with information on prevention. This direct engagement aims to connect households with necessary resources.
A public dashboard will launch to track complaints and properties receiving service. This tool allows residents to monitor local data in real time. City officials are urging residents to secure their trash and eliminate hiding places. They also recommend sealing openings around homes to prevent entry.
Jordan said he looks forward to working with city departments to make sure the issue is properly prioritized. He noted his long history with the Health Department. Residents can report issues to Philadelphia’s Vector Control Services at 215-685-9000.
The appointment marks the latest step in the city’s effort to improve neighborhood sanitation. The position addresses public health concerns associated with rodents. The multi-department approach seeks to streamline communication and action.
