The SS United States will become the world’s largest artificial reef after being sunk off the Florida coast on November 12, 2026. The 990-foot vessel, formerly known as America’s Flagship, will be deployed approximately 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. The operation is set to begin at 10 a.m., weather permitting.
The ship spent nearly three decades docked along Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront. It departed that location on February 19, 2025, following years of uncertainty regarding its future. Extensive preparation and environmental remediation took place in Mobile, Alabama, before the liner moved to its final resting place in the Gulf of Mexico.
Okaloosa County officials say the project will create new opportunities for marine life, scuba diving, and tourism. County Board Chairman Trey Goodwin called the event a historic moment. He stated, “Her story will continue to be told by thousands of people who visit her in tandem with the SS United States Conservancy’s land-based museum.”
The liner made history in 1952 by setting a transatlantic speed record that still stands. During its service years, the vessel carried presidents, celebrities, and other notable passengers across the Atlantic. Supporters of the project hope the transformation will preserve the ship’s legacy while providing a lasting attraction for divers and marine ecosystems.
