Jesús de Miguel Alameda, the 30-year-old forward for CD Tenerife, died after a collision with the goalkeeper during a league match. The club confirmed the news at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, ending a period of uncertainty following the incident on the pitch.
The collision occurred in the final minutes of the game against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. Tenerife launched a counterattack, and De Miguel moved past the defensive line to challenge for a high ball outside the penalty area. Goalkeeper Jesús Owono left his position to block the forward. Owono missed the ball and struck De Miguel in the chest with his knee.
De Miguel collapsed immediately and was unconscious. Players on the field called for medical assistance, and the team’s medical staff entered the pitch. They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than five minutes. The medical team restored the player’s vital signs on the field, but he was rushed to the intensive care unit. He did not recover from the subsequent cardiorespiratory arrest.
Referee Pérez Hernández showed the goalkeeper a red card and stopped the match by mutual agreement with less than two minutes remaining. The official report noted that the keeper used excessive force during the challenge for the ball.
Spanish sports law requires authorities to inform the Public Prosecutor's Office if there are signs of a criminal offense. Under Article 99 of the Sports Law, the federative bodies must transfer the case files to the Ministry of Justice for review. The legal process will depend on the results of a mandatory autopsy.
Forensic experts will determine if a direct causal link exists between the impact and the cardiac arrest. The investigation will also assess the trajectory of the move and the goalkeeper’s intent, weighing the action against the accepted risks of professional football.
