The Middle East conflict has entered its tenth month, with tensions rising as the U.S. midterm elections near. On Monday, the United States launched what officials called defensive attacks against the Iranian island of Qeshm.

The island sits in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipping. U.S. officials spoke to CBS, a network associated with the BBC in the United States, to confirm the strikes. They characterized the operations as limited in scope.

Iranian state news agency IRNA reported multiple explosions on the island on Monday. The U.S. government stated the strikes were a direct reaction to fire opened by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The IRGC targeted a U.S. aircraft during the engagement.

The Central Command, the U.S. military branch responsible for operations in the Middle East, was contacted for further comment but had not issued a detailed response as of the reporting time. The timing of the strikes places them just before the midterm elections, which will determine whether Republicans or Democrats control Congress.

President Donald Trump faces declining poll numbers and internal party pressure to end the war. The conflict began in February when the United States and Israel launched initial strikes against Iran. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said he felt no urgency to escalate further.

He told Axios that the U.S. would act but without rushing the process. Trump claimed the U.S. had financially paralyzed Iran, noting the country lacked funds and fuel while its population grew tired of the situation. In a Fox News interview, he mentioned the U.S. might need to strike a facility called Pickaxe, which is linked to the Iranian nuclear program.

Trump described a potential strike on Pickaxe as minor and quick to execute, estimating it would take about an hour. When asked if the U.S. planned to resume large scale attacks after the midterms, he answered no. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told IRNA that intense talks are underway with Washington through mediators to end the war. He said Tehran is ready for both diplomatic and military paths, leaving the choice between negotiation and military aggression to the United States.
