Voting concluded on Tuesday, November 3, marking the final day for Americans to cast ballots in the midterm elections. The outcome will determine which party controls the U.S. House and Senate for the next two years. Early data indicates that Democrats hold a double-digit lead in total ballots cast, with more than 59 million votes already recorded.

That early total represents nearly half of the final count from the previous midterm cycle. While Democrats are favored to win the House, the path to control requires flipping just three seats. Recent shifts in the political environment have strengthened their position, even in the weeks leading up to the vote. Republicans attempted to secure their majority through mid-decade redistricting, but analysts suggest those changes may not be sufficient to retain the chamber.

The Senate race presents a more complex picture. Democrats need to flip four seats to seize control, a goal that seemed unlikely at the start of the cycle. Strong Democratic candidates and a challenging national climate for Republicans have made this scenario possible. North Carolina is currently the only seat where Democrats are favored to flip control. Beyond that, the remaining contests are either toss-ups or slight Republican favorites.

Most of these competitive Senate races are in states that Donald Trump won by double-digit margins in 2024. All five Republican-held toss-up states, excluding Maine, fall into that category. This reality drove Trump to campaign heavily in red states before Election Day to mobilize his base. Michigan stands out as a critical target. A Republican victory there would alter the mathematical odds for Democrats, potentially limiting their gains to a single seat. Conversely, low Republican turnout could lead to Democratic control of the chamber with a sweep of up to six or seven seats.

Results began arriving at 6 p.m. ET in Kentucky and Indiana. The counting process is expected to be lengthy in many districts. Voters were advised to exercise patience, as final tallies in close races may not be known for days or even weeks. The official determination of the House and Senate majorities will depend on the final certification of these ballots.
