Missouri voters rejected Proposition A on Tuesday, preserving the 2022 congressional district boundaries over the proposed 2025 map. Unofficial results from the Associated Press indicated that more than 60 percent of participants voted against the change. The current lines will remain in place for upcoming federal elections.

The 2025 map had been redrawn mid-decade to expand the Fifth District from Kansas City to Jefferson City. Republicans advocated for the switch to increase their seat count. The proposal would have shifted areas of Gladstone and parts of Clay County from the Fifth to the Sixth District.

The measure triggered a months-long debate across the state. Richard Von-Glahn, executive director of People Not Politicians, led the campaign against the new lines. He characterized the vote as a direct response to state leadership.

Von-Glahn noted that voters had previously told the governor and legislature to avoid the change. He argued that officials ignored local preferences in favor of national interests. The electorate then delivered what he described as a clear defeat.

Voters simultaneously approved Amendment 6 by a 60 percent margin. This amendment adds protections to the voter initiative petition process. It requires 80 percent of both the House and Senate to refer a proposed change to the ballot. The public retains the final say on any such measures.

The split results leave the state with the existing district map while altering how future ballot initiatives are handled. The current Fifth District boundaries remain intact for the next congressional cycle.
