Ohio elects first female governor in state history

The Associated Press called the Ohio gubernatorial race for Democrat Amy Acton, making her the first woman to win the office in the state's history. She defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur who held the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

Acton, 60, served as the Ohio Department of Health director under outgoing Republican Governor Mike DeWine. She held that post during the early months of the pandemic, joining DeWine for regular briefings on lockdowns and safety measures. She resigned from the role in June 2020. Her victory marks the first time in two decades that Ohio voters have chosen a Democrat to lead the state.

The campaign concluded with national scrutiny over a final attack ad from the Ramaswamy team. The spot featured Acton's estranged mother, Donna Arthur, who called Acton a liar. Arthur lost custody of Acton at age 12 due to an alleged sexual assault by her husband, Acton's stepfather. The ad drew criticism from some Republicans, including DeWine, though Trump and Ramaswamy defended the strategy.

Acton campaigned on her public health background rather than prior political experience. She promoted policies including a statewide child tax credit and the forgiveness of medical debt. Her platform focused on practical governance rather than partisan ideology.

She will assume office in January facing a legislative gridlock. The state legislature remains controlled by Republicans, a setup that is expected to constrain her ability to enact new laws. This follows a string of difficult statewide elections for Ohio Democrats in recent cycles.
